NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies

Networking Opportunities

A Registered Nurse was not on my list of things I wanted to be when I grew up. I became a Medical Assistant first because I needed a stable job that was not in a factory. I’m from a small town in Georgia and most people there work in carpet mills. I wanted something different. This change in profession sparked a fire in me. This was when I discovered my love for the medical field. College was a scary idea for me because I was a high school dropout and could not believe that I could do it. I was lucky to have family that believed in me more than I believed in myself. In 2011 I graduated with my Associates in nursing. This is when my adventure in nursing began. My nursing career first started on a renal floor and from there I took notice that nursing had a broad field of needs. When I moved to Detroit, I had the desire to broaden my skills and that is when I stepped into the ER. This is where I found my home. The ER opened a true understanding of serving the community for me. Then with time, experience, and a growing need to be the best nurse I could be has led me to pursuing my masters NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies.

When deciding on which school to pick I felt a bit overwhelmed. Undergraduate scared me and here I am jumping into the deep end of graduate school. Then I ran across Walden University. Walden’s vision hit home when I read “the degree that it can be applied by its graduates to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good”,  (Vision, Mission, and Goals, 2020, Vision section). This statement encouraged me to delve deeper in what Walden had to offer.

Walden University offered things that aligned with my goals and the flexibility I needed to be successful in my pursuit to becoming a better nurse. I kept debating on what program to pursue because I had several friends who were looking to be Family Nurse Practitioners. This just didn’t feel like a good fit for me. NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies. While looking at the list of programs one stuck out to me. The Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program that had a RN track. This track along with outcomes that are practical and that can be applied within my professional development is what I was looking for. The MSN learning outcomes such as, “exhibit ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories/ethical principles (altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, social justice) in accordance with ethically responsible, legally accountable, specialist nursing practice”, (Master of Science in Nursing, 2020, Outcomes section) is what helped me choose Walden University. It aligned everything I was looking for in a program.

The path that I am pursuing has brought me to connect with people who can help me achieve my goals. Unknowingly I had been networking my entire career. I am an inquisitive person that loves to meet people in different aspects of the health care field. This has led me to making connection that I can call on to help while in the program. NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies. The article 5 Reasons Nurses Should Engage in Professional Networking states, “every professional connection should be based on interactions that involve knowledge sharing and mutual professional development”, (5 Reasons Nurses Should Engage in Professional Networking, n.d., para. 5) and here I thought I was just making friends.

The advancement of my career is important to me and choosing the right college was imperative. The goals and outcomes are in coordination with my desires of becoming a better nurse that can inspire and affect change in my community. Walden University has developed an all-inclusive environment to help me succeed in my academic endeavors such as, writing center, library, online resources, and professional development resources. NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies.

In conclusion having a strong desire to better myself through education so that I can promote change in my community will become reality. I must stick to my path and utilize the resources at disposal and continue to professionally network to  have the support I need.

NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies response post

It is very nice to meet you virtually. I enjoyed reading your post. I appreciate your honesty in saying that nursing was not what you initially wanted to do; but I am glad that you discovered the nursing field and that it has made a change in you for the better. Like you, I felt that I did not fully identify with the FNP program. I chose the Acute Care NP program because I have always loved fast-paced environments such as ICU or ER. I also love the challenge of the patients that often present to these areas. These patient populations challenge your knowledge and often require help from other colleagues depending on the complexity of the patient.   I also agree with you when you talk about how important networking is. One of the many things I love about nursing is that in most work settings, you are apart of a team and can call on others when you have a question or need insight. The article by Schmidt, 2020, states that professional networking “…serves to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information that are vital to keeping a nurse’s knowledge fresh and relevant. I cannot agree with this statement more. NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies.

I also love to meet new people in the health care field as well; I find that it can be very beneficial. For example, knowing someone in the phlebotomy department is essential when you have a patient with poor peripheral access, and you need to get their labs or start an IV. I also network with other medical professionals such as NP’s and PA’s to gain more insight on their specific responsibilities. Now since I am in school, I will be seeking more NP’s for advice and mentorship NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies. An NP mentor would offer guidance within the field, emotional support, and build confidence; which will be needed throughout my academic and professional career (Walden, 2019).

Choosing Walden was a great choice, they offer flexible learning and an extensive amount of resources.  After completing undergrad at a traditional university where they had resources such as a writing center, library, and online resources; I was pleasantly surprised to see that Walden had the same resources in an online setting NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies.

Wendy, have you met any NP’s while networking? If so, what insight have they given you about the field? What do they like/ dislike about their profession?

An advanced practice nurse collaborates and communicates with patients, families, doctors, nurses, and specialists to ensure patients receive the care they need. As they diagnose, treat, manage, and educate patients, they are responsible for ensuring patient safety and maintaining ethical behavior. Competencies have been developed to help the advanced practice nurse to understand the practice knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to be successful.

NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies Discussion – Week 1

My Goals and University Vision and Mission

To make a difference in not one person, but many. To make a difference in not one country, but many. To provide education to the poor and the needy. Those are my professional goal. I want to provide care to people that did not think they could get healthcare. I want to teach people how to fix and prevent health complications. NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies People that suffer because they do not have access to healthcare. Those are the people that I want to reach. This is my vision and mission: to provide healthcare to underdeveloped countries and people in areas that have limited access to healthcare.

When I was a little girl, I would go with my Grandmother to work. She was a home health aide and I was amazed at how she cared for others. I would tell her that someday I want to do what she did. I admired that she helped others and that they were so thankful for the care she gave them. My Grandmother would tell me, “No, Tanya, don’t do what I do. Do more and go higher, become a nurse”. I worked as a nursing assistant, to a medication administrator, to a licensed nurse, to a registered nurse, and then gained my bachelor’s degree. NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies I am sometimes in shock that I am completing my career goals to become a nurse practitioner. My goal is to help others when they feel they cannot get help.

Walden University’s vision and mission are to provide education to people so that they may apply the learning they receive and promote global, social, and economic improvement (Walden, n.d.-b). The vision is to allow people to use their education to create solutions for the challenges that are produced in our society (Walden, n.d.-b). Some goals that the college has that relates to this writer’s goals are the promotion of integrity, research, critical thinking, and the knowledge and skills to promote change in our world (Walden, n.d.-b). NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies My goal of providing education to others must first come from education being provided to me. The education that the writer receives at Walden will help to build the skills and knowledge needed to help others throughout the world. With this education, I hope to promote a positive change in people’s lives.

One of the outcomes that Walden’s MSN program has is to educate on evaluating the health needs of diverse populations. This includes educating, health promotion, and disease and injury prevention in diverse populations (Walden, n.d.-a). Many countries need education just as much as they need actual hands-on health care. Education is key to helping under-developed countries and populations decrease illnesses, injuries, and diseases.

NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies. Another Walden MSN outcome is for the nurses in the program to commit to ethical standards. Some of these include justice, dignity, and autonomy (Walden, n.d.-a). I strive to advocate for patient’s rights and what is in their best interest. This outcome of having nursing students have the ongoing commitment to ethical standards is a strong foundation of my academic and professional goals.

Success: Defined and Personalized

Success is defined differently for each person. Personal success may be different from professional success. Educational success for this writer is to graduate and maintain a 3.8 or higher GPA. Professional success will come after I receive my certification for a Family Nurse Practitioner. Personal success will come when I treat my first patient that had limited access to healthcare. Another feeling of accomplishment and success will be when I teach my first patient how to help them improve their health, and then they help to improve others with the knowledge I provided.

Incorporation of Social Change

According to Walden University, positive social change is improving conditions in human and social populations and conditions (n.d.-b). This is done by education about strategies, dignity, improving student knowledge and understanding of different cultures, communities, and societies (Walden, n.d.-b). Each student is being taught to be a professional role model with integrity and knowledge through Walden education. The education that Walden provides to this writer will help to gain a degree and certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. This degree will allow for opportunities to provide healthcare and education to under-developed countries. Providing healthcare to those that have difficulty accessing it is providing social, economic, and global change NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies.

Missions work with a focus on healthcare is increasing from the United States to under-developed countries, in fact in 2008 there were almost 6,000 groups sent out of the United States in one year (Steinke, 2015). Education through Walden to receive an advanced practice nursing degree can help to open doors to other countries. In many countries, such as Africa, nurses are not roles considered important (Ibrahim et al., 2019). Ryan-Krause wrote an article about mission healthcare in underdeveloped countries expressing the need for understanding and the need for global healthcare (2016). Another way to implement social change is through relationships with community members and officials (Ryan-Krause, 2016). Through education and courses, I hope to learn and incorporate cultural differences and ways to promote global change. Some courses also involve researching political aspects and community members. Which may lead to someday building relationships with these leaders and members.

Many people can help my mission and goals become a reality. Through this writer’s place of employment, there are nurse practitioners that have been willing to assist if guidance is needed. The college has opportunities to reach out to faculty and other students with any assistance needed throughout the program. NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies. Throughout this course and my Walden education, other students may offer opportunities for learning or gateways to helping other countries.
